  • Abstract
The deployment of a ring-based synchronous optical network (SONET) transport architecture as a rapid overlay for existing asynchronous systems is discussed. The architecture consists of a direct (nongroomed) synchronous transport signal level 1 (STS-1)-based network with VT accessibility at the network periphery. STS-1 and VT bandwidth management is carried out in a distributed manner by survivable rings and a few SONET cross connects to carry interring traffic. In contrast to a point-to-point asynchronous architecture, it is shown that this SONET architecture will require considerably fewer and smaller STS(3/3) cross connects and no VT(3/1) cross connects
