Abstract
Design information for the grounded base or Butler oscillator is now available in books but there is still a need for clarification on sizing of the feedback capacitors and design to achieve specified signal levels. A designer must choose a definite set of values and this should be a best choice in some sense. The question is elaborated on using maximum gain as the optimum criterion because this results in starting under the worst conditions. The second issue is to design to obtain a specific output signal level into a specified load. That issue is also considered with a suggested procedure for the emitter-current-limited version of the circuit, but not in a definitive manner
