Abstract
A method for implementing a magnetic recording system using a ternary Trumpis (1975) code is discussed and evaluated theoretically. The saturation recording technique is extended from two level recording to three level recording by using a nonoriented media state in conjunction with two oppositely oriented media states. A Lorentzian model of the magnetic recording channel is used to find the theoretical performance of the system. Rate 1 binary-to-ternary convolutional codes of constraint length 7 are found to provide an increase in the effective signal-to-noise ratio of the magnetic recording channel
