Abstract
The goal of this paper is to make an investigation and a timing analysis of several interesting communication protocols designed to be used in industrial control networks. By comparing protocol properties with application requirements, an appropriate protocol for the demands of the communication system can be found. The selected fieldbus protocols are discussed and a comparison of their static network parameters such as total transmissions time, and data coding efficiency versus data size is performed. The importance of MAC protocol in meeting stringent requirements imposed by real time traffic is underlined in the presentation. In the second part we analyze through simulation the traffic load influence to the average time delay for two of the presented protocols managed by zero and scheduled releasing policies.
