Abstract
In this paper, we elaborate on our previous works (Z. Razak et al., 2003) on developing a recognition chip of Jawi characters using a chain code algorithm and problems occurred. An explanation of Jawi characters was made in the previous work. We also discuss our second approach, i.e. using a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to extract coefficients from the characters based on their features and using these coefficients to develop a unique code. This unique code is used to recognize it. Hardware model entity integration is also considered. We first discuss why we chose DWT and the implementation method and then consider the problems we faced in using the chain code algorithm. The full implementation of the design is presented, followed by a conclusion.
