Abstract
This paper proposes the refactoring of the current Ethernet 802.3u layer 1 architecture and its interface to layer 2 to better accommodate the requirements of real-time-Ethernet (RTE) communication systems as used in factory automation. The paper supports this proposal by reviewing the relevant characteristics of RTE protocols, issues encountered whilst implementing RTE nodes and the innovation potential unlocked where these proposals to be adopted. Work in progress is described.
