Abstract
The main cause for long-term failure in the case of the total hip replacement is osteolysis. Its prevention is based on early detection, as resulting from a regular follow-up by means of X-ray imaging. This paper proposes a method that uses a complete (actual bone, medullar area and prostheses) three-dimensional model of the femoral bone, in order to construct a projection function which approximates the radiography data. Elaborating on the model application we build tools for detecting the translations of the prostheses within the femoral bone and, respectively, modification of the bone structure, thus useful in early osteolysis detection.
