  • Abstract
    The use of photonic devices to interconnect electronic integrated circuits and systems for applications in local telecommunications, computation, and signal processing is discussed. Advanced development activities in photonic devices for these applications, including optoelectronic integrated circuits, integrated optical circuits, and fiber integrated structures, are considered. Particular attention is given to (1) passive circuits for multiplexing/demultiplexing; (2) integrated optic modulators in LiNbO3; (3) integrated optic switch arrays; and (4) a novel class of fiber taps that are attractive for beam power extraction application
