Abstract
Historically, the design of lasers, photodiodes and optical filters has been dominated by issues mainly associated with manufacturing technology, and speed limitations have not been dominant. This paper briefly reviews the earlier speed limitations, puts them into context, and extrapolates to what they will be for Terabit operation. External modulators and coherent detection are obvious approaches to employ in the 10 GHz+regime, but we consider only conventional laser sources, detectors and filters
