Abstract
We have developed an efficient numerical method, based on a transfer-matrix formulation and counter-propagating waves in cylindrical structures, for calculating the resonant frequencies and field distributions in general non-spherical truncated oblate and prolate structures. The technique can be applied to structures with arbitrary cylindrical shapes where analytic expressions cannot be used. We have applied the method to analyze the resonant characteristics and match experimental data obtained with newly developed microbottle and microdiscus optical resonators. We also apply the method to calculate resonant frequencies and modal fields in coupled microresonators.
