Abstract
A framework for multicasting layered video using replicated servers is proposed. The advantages of combining server replication, layered video and multicasting techniques in the same streaming architecture are analyzed. An efficient server selection algorithm, called WLP (weighted layers protocol) is based on a selection function that takes into consideration the importance of each video layer and client-server distance is proposed. Multimedia applications need efficient QoS techniques for large deployment on the Internet. Techniques such as mirroring, multicasting and layered video where proposed as separate technologies to improve QoS of multimedia applications when deployed in a large-scale networks. Simulations performed on different multicast sessions gives the good performance of the protocol.
