Abstract
This paper provides a review over three different approaches to find the radiated electric field from an overhead transmission line located above a lossy ground. Two of the analytical solutions reviewed are frequency-domain techniques and the other one is a time-domain method derived by applying Maxwellpsilas equations directly. In all these three techniques, we assume that the line behaves as a chain of small dipoles. The radiated fields are calculated at selected locations and using the numerical electromagnetic code (NEC), the results are compared in order to verify the agreement among and efficiency of these methods. It can be shown that using the analytical expressions reviewed in this paper, the transient fields around power transmission lines can be calculated accurately.
