  • Abstract
This work proposes a cooperative strategy for efficiently multiplexing real time video traffic and non real time data traffic in the uplink of the UMTS WCDMA. Variable bit rate traffic is split in a relatively constant component and a bursty-component. An RRM entity located on network side allocates a share of the resource to the mobiles at the beginning of their session for conveying the relatively constant component. The MAC sublayer located in the mobile uses this resource along the session without supplementary assignment delay. The remaining (bursty) component of the trafficc is conveyed by a time-share radio resource dynamically assigned by the RRM entity in response to the mobile MAC requests. Video jitter is advantageously reduced. A performance study using OPNET shows the cooperative protocol brings a real improvement to the UMTS standard, achieving a very high utilization of the radio resource while satisfying the QoS constraints.
