  • Abstract
With the advent of cellular networks and the increasing number of users in this environment, the demands of different services are growing day by day. For many such services it is required to identify the exact location of a mobile user within a radius of few meters or so. We present a location management scheme to determine the exact location of the mobile user when it transmits a distress signal or a proximity query request. The distress signal may be transmitted whenever some emergency service, such as fire or ambulance, is needed. The proximity query may be raised in case that any information, such as "Where is the nearest hospital?", is required. When the mobile user is in distress, the servicing base station computes the distance of the mobile user using the received signal strength. Then the servicing base station computes the exact location of the mobile unit with the help of the above distance and its distance from any of the adjacent base stations. In case of a proximity query, the mobile user may change its location after sending the query. In this case, the mobile user sends another signal after a certain period of time. The servicing base station computes the location of the destination from the two successive received signals.
