Abstract
The author explores possible strategies for adapting university research to cope better with several trends he identifies in reviewing a range of activities from basic research applied research through commercialization and technology transfer. He points out that there is evidence that the classic pursuit of research of research at a university, stressing long-term basic research formulated primarily by faculty-based initiatives, will face difficulty in meeting demands for initiatives, based on industrial partnerships, shorter-term benefits, and technology transfer.
