Abstract
The stability criterion for the finite-difference time-domain algorithm is derived using the Neumman technique. This derivation is considered to be more rigorous and should be more mathematically acceptable compared with the derivation by A. Taflove and M.E. Brodwin (see IEEE Trans. Micro. Theo. and Tech., vol.MTT-23, no.8, p.623-30, 1975). A subtle error in a derivation by A. Taflove (see IEEE Trans. Electro. Comp., vol.EMC-22, no.3, p.191-202, 1980) is pointed out. The stability criterion presented agrees with that of Taflove and Brodwin for n =1. They required that r ⩽0.707 and r ⩽0.5777 for n =2 and n =3, respectively, while it is required here that r ⩽0.5 for both n =2 and n =3
