Abstract
This paper investigates the performance of an IR wireless LAN which is designed to support asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) speech services. Emphasis is placed on the handover priority medium access control (MAC) protocol that utilises both guard and queuing mechanisms. Its performance parameters such as new call blocking probability, packet dropping probability and forced termination probability due to handover failure are revealed for fixed slot assignment. Finally, the information obtained from this study is used in link design to give numerical results of the performance of an ATM IR-LAN where variable bit rate (VBR) voice terminal users (TUs) are served
