    Recent breakthroughs in optoelectronics technology have increased the feasibility of smart-pixel based processing modules. Most notable are developments in vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) performance, producibility, flexibility and integrability. Advances in micro-optics, packaging, and multifunctional integration are also expediting demonstrations of VCSEL array-based smart pixel demonstrations
