  • Abstract
    This paper describes the design of an impulse based ultra-wideband (UWB) transmitter for short range communications. It consists of a pulse generator, pulse shaping filter, modulator, up conversion mixer, differential to single ended converter and output driver. The configurable pulse width and subsequent shaping maximizes the transmitted energy while complying with the IEEE 802.15.4a emission spectral mask. The transmitter is capable of simultaneously providing binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and on-off keying (OOK) modulated signal. Implemented in 0.18μm CMOS technology, the transmitter draws 47.5mA of current from a 1.8V supply for continuous transmission, and an average current of about 2.66mA for a 2.5ns pulse at 16 mega pulses per second (MPPS) using power management.
