Abstract
A detailed comparison of measurements and field-strength predictions in the UHF frequency range gained from 3D wave propagation models for both rural and urban areas is presented. Specifically, the authors investigated the performance of novel UTD (uniform theory of diffraction) models in both typical rural and urban areas concerning microcell and macrocell transmitter networks. The necessity of high-quality morphological and topographical data and the importance of 3D propagation analysis was demonstrated. However, even with a lower resolution of the database, good agreement in prediction of mean field strength level and probability density function is shown. The consideration of multipath propagation as well as a more accurate description of diffraction and refraction effects leads to better predictions compared with results gained from empirical or semi-empirical models.<>
