Abstract
In a world of competing industry standards, MPEG-2 and SDI will give the opportunity to combine all existing and future formats and systems without conversion hassles. While the whole industry is moving towards all digital environments, it will become absolutely necessary to have strong standards. Open systems will rule the markets as soon as the technology will become affordable. What will help is the introduction of the 4:2:2 Professional Profile and the new affordable digital tape formats. Also the editing system will move from expensive and proprietary platforms to cheap Windows NT PCs, transporting the power of nonlinear video editing to a ever growing body of editors
