  • Abstract
The use of field emission cathodes as ionization sources in time of flight mass spectrometers (ToF-MS) offers three main advantages over thermionic cathodes: (i) reduced energy dispersion; (ii) low energy consumption and (iii) greater capacity for miniaturization. The paper reports on the development of a polymer embedded carbon nanopearl field emitter that has been operated as the ionization source in a commercial compact ToF-MS system.
