  • Abstract
Since cellular radio has wide spread coverage, it has been recognized as an adequate technology to support ITS services in metropolitan areas. Thus, some studies considering analog cellular systems (AMPS) infrastructure using cellular digital packet data (CDPD) channels in order to provide ITS services have been conducted. Due to the evolution of dual IS-54 systems into an entirely digital system, IS-136 has become a strong candidate to support ITS communications. In this paper we analyze the ITS traffic demand on a IS-136 cellular infrastructure, focusing on the IS-130 that is its data transmission standard. Multiple access techniques suitable for IS-130 are suggested for optimizing the use of data channels. Traffic analysis conducted for several scenarios probe the IS-136 suitability for ITS services. Furthermore, it is shown that ITS produces just a minor impact on voice channels
