Abstract
Many utilities rely upon a laboratory analysis of dissolved gas as their primary condition monitor for power transformers. The routine sampling period is annually but some utilities extend this to up to three years. The author briefly outlines the development of gas sensors since the 1970s mentioning their advantages and drawbacks
