Abstract
LCA (life cycle analysis) of distribution cables has been presented to utilities and cablemakers. Two major items of environmental impact are: energy loss (I2R), while using the cable, and refining metals for the conductors. Multilateral discussions between utilities, KEMA and cablemakers in the Netherlands now pay attention to the first item. The second point has resulted in a drive for technological developments at NKF. Three technological developments were started: recycling of PVC scrap; improving the silane process for LV XLPE; and insulation skin colour coding
