Abstract
Wavelength division multiplexing is the most promising option for the next generation optical communications systems. Semiconductor optical devices are attractive for WDM networks because of its capability for light amplification and wavelength tuning. This presentation introduces recent progress in semiconductor optical devices for WDM networks, such as tunable light sources and tunable filters. Tunable lasers are attractive light sources for WDM networks. Tuning range of more than 100 nm has been reported in super structure grating (SSG) DBR lasers
