  • Abstract
A three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor driven by a prime mover can be self-excited by a bank of 3-phase capacitors to give supply as an induction generator. In any motor or generator, normally one side provides the excitation and other side produces power i.e. only half of the machine produces power. In a 3-phase slip ring induction motor both the stator and rotor windings can be connected in series with proper phase sequence. The rotor can be driven by a suitable prime mover and the stator-rotor combination self-excited by a 3-phase capacitor bank. Both stator and rotor sides now produce power. Hence, if frame-size and conductor-size remain the same, nearly double the power output is possible with respect to the original induction motor. Experimental results confirm our conception. This type of generation is ideally suited for medium sized load in an isolated power system with locally available nonconventional energy sources e.g. biogas, microhydel, tidal power, wind power etc., driving the prime mover
