Abstract
This paper outlines the evolution of digital simulation of power systems and describes the present state of the art. This evolution is caused by and closely follows the evolution of the digital computer. Both the speedup of the hardware and the sophistication of the software environment have greatly influenced the digital simulation of power systems and its various applications. The hardware speedup has allowed the real-time simulation of larger systems while improved database and graphics have allowed the applications to be more user friendly
