Abstract
This paper uses modern control as a tool to ensure the sustainability of the formed islands after uncontrollable system separation. It focuses on islands with excess generation. This paper uses the optimal control, specifically the linear quadratic regulator methodology, to design a new local power plant controller capable of improving the transient frequency response of thermal power plants. The designed controller uses the power plant mechanical power and speed as feedback signals. Moreover, the setting of the power reference value used in the LQR designed is studied. The case study under consideration is the separation of the Scottish grid from the rest of the UK grid. Results are provided in the form of time domain simulations via MATLAB/SIMULINK.
