Abstract
In order to enhance squirrel cage induction motor (SCIM) operation and performance as a new machine or a repaired machine, it is important to have a basic knowledge of the design and manufacturing elements that go into the stator and rotor. The SCIM is basically a converter of electrical energy (stator) to mechanical energy (rotor/shaft assembly) via mutual inductance. This paper provides those who specify, purchase, install, operate and repair SCIMpsilas with a basic understanding of what is required to make this energy conversion. The factors that may impact the motor performance and longevity are highlighted. The scope of product covered is from 75 kW (100 hp) to 3750 kW (5000 hp), 400 volts to 6.6 kV typically used in the petroleum and chemical industry.
