Abstract
The communications engineering design system (COEDS), a computer-aided design (CAD) tool developed by the University of Kansas for the analysis of colocated telecommunications equipment, is designed as a shell or wrapper around electromagnetic interference/electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC) analysis codes previously implemented, providing intelligent user interfaces for data entry, a smart postprocessor to display data in a thought enhancing manner, and all data management functions. The COEDS shell can be applied to other EMI/EMC codes and can be adapted to other large programs. COEDS permits the engineer to determine the interference between communication systems where the principal coupling results from the antenna-to-antenna interactions causing multiple unwanted signals to enter sensitive receivers. An example is shown which demonstrates the block diagram interface, automated program operation, generation of graphical output, and ease of use in changing the design to meet performance criteria. Key features of COEDS are the block diagram editor, the configuration database, the test plan/frequency plan generator, use of a mouse to point and select for all input and execution, and a postprocessor for output displays.<>
