Abstract
This paper addresses the analysis and detection of open switch faults in back-to-back PWM converters used in doubly-fed induction generators (DFIG). Several methods have previously been proposed to detect open switch faults in either the machine-side or line-side converter. The operating conditions that can cause possible false alarms with these methods are investigated. The proposed method detects open switch faults more reliably than any of the existing methods and hence improves overall system reliability. The performance of the existing methods and proposed methods has been verified by both simulation and experiment.
