  • Abstract
Informed decisions must be made in determining the risk in dealing with flammable gases or vapours and flammable liquids to ensure the safety of personnel and facilities. Past practices, of classification which tends toward either overclassification or underclassification are examined, and the application of probability concepts to hazardous area classification is described. An overview of the National Electric Code protection techniques for Class I is presented as well as a discussion of international protective techniques for Zone 1
