Abstract
It is argued that classes, tutorials and lectures are often hampered in their development when only pre-prepared or pre-stored illustrative materials are use. Three important types of learning conversations: the Why learn, the what is this, and the How better to learn this conversations are considered. Important "teachable moments" occur during problem solving and theory development, which are best dealt with by ad-hoc diagrammatic explanation. This is particularly true when synchronous \´e-learning\´ conversations in advanced topics are concerned. Pen-tablet interfaces allow for much greater flexibility and richness under such circumstances. They also allow for valuable personal idiosyncrasies in the free development of mathematical notations.
