Abstract
We propose using short optical solitons to increase the length of repeaterless optical transmission systems. A soliton pulse will spread temporally and narrow spectrally in a silica-core fiber which then serves as the input for the rest of the system. Experiments suggest a soliton pulse width of about 3 ps.
