Abstract
Geographic information system is an effective tool for managing and displaying spatial data. With the lake water environment as an example, the Poyang lake water environmental geographic information system (PLWEGIS) was developed with object-oriented development tool-visual basic language, MapInfo and Matlab software in this paper, and main functions were introduced in detail. PLWEGIS had many functions such as displaying, editing, querying and searching, spatial statistics and analysis, thematic map compiling, and water quality evaluation. The abundant water environmental data could be managed conveniently by development of this system, and water resource management and water quality visualization evaluation could be realized. The development of this system has important realistic meaning for protection of Poyang lake water environment, which will provide assistant decision supports for reasonable exploiting lake water resources.
