Abstract
The fatal defect of existing approaches of integrating geographical information system (GIS) and distribution management system (DMS) is neither of them can meet the demand of real-time when the GIS connects with SCADA. In view of this, the application of OLE automation technology is proposed in this paper, i.e. embedding a GIS application as an object into SCADA. The functions of telemetry, telesignal, telecontrol and telesetting of network elements in field can be implemented into a GIS support platform directly, by means of real-time two-way transmission of data and commands between SCADA and GIS. As a result, it can satisfy the need of optimum time responses and reliability of DMS to a considerable degree. Finally, this approach of integrating GIS and DMS is tested on a district utility of Beijing City in China. The result demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of the approach presented in this paper
