  • Abstract
The Swiss Lithoclast is a pneumatically driven intracorporeal lithotripter used to fragment ureteral and renal calculi. Impact energy from a vibrating projectile is transmitted through a semi-rigid or flexible probe and delivered to the target stone, which is placed in contact with the distal end of the probe. A laser-optic measurement system was developed to quantify the probe tip movement of the Lithoclast. The system was calibrated and used to determine the displacement and velocity of the Lithoclast probe tip at various deflection angles and driving pressures. Such data could provide critical information for the design of more effective and efficient flexible probes for the Lithoclast
