Abstract
Describes a mathematical model of the fluid movements in eye responsible for the generation of the intraocular pressure (IOP). The model was written in STELLA (high performance systems), and includes: ciliary and choroidal hemodynamics, the Starling equilibria for ciliary capillary ultrafiltration and passive fluid flux across the non-pigment epithelium (NPE), active secretion via generation of an osmotic gradient across the NPE, aqueous outflow via trabecular and uveoscleral pathways, and the IOP. Model simulations were verified experimentally or are consistent with in vitro studies and current concepts of aqueous dynamics. The model is useful for teaching ocular hydrodynamics and generating experimental hypotheses
