Abstract
Summary form only given. With the launching of the SSV Corwith Cramer, the Sea Education Association of Woods Hole, Mass. now operates two sailing vessels which serve as research platforms for sea semesters. The Cramer, which is the first vessel built to meet US Coast Guard regulations for sailing school vessels, is modeled closely after the schooner Westward. A variety of design modifications and equipment changes greatly improve her performance as a research vessel. Cramer´s greater length (135 feet) and beam (26 feet) serve to increase speed, stability and working deck area. The vessel´s onboard research equipment consists of standard oceanographic sampling gear such as plankton nets, trawls, cores, dredges and Nisken bottles. In addition, the Cramer carries a variety of modern sampling and analytic gear including a 3 and 12-kHz PDR, digital recording BT (bathythermograph) and CTD (conductivity, temperature, and density) measurement, salinometer, fluorometer, spectrophotometer, and four microcomputers for data recovery, processing, and storage
