Abstract
Y.C. Guo and M.S. Smith (IEE Proc-H, vol.130, no.5 (1983)) described a technique for peak sidelobe reduction in a linear phased array called phase weighting. With this technique, the theory of stochastic processes is used to predict the sidelobe levels achievable using phase weighting. Y.C. Guo and M.S. Smith used a simplified formula to make predictions, which could then be compared with empirical results. They found good agreement in some cases, but not when the first sidelobe level was comparable with the peak random sidelobe. Here, an improved prediction formula is used, which accounts for the first sidelobe´s effects and shows good agreement with the empirical results in all cases. Comparison between predictions and empirical results from computer simulation show good agreement.<>
