Abstract
Eskom\´s Transmission division is commissioning a new Energy Management System (EMS) known as TEMSE. This EMS included requirements for advanced alarm processing facilities and enhanced Human Machine Interface functionality. The requirements covered alarm data reduction and the provision of "what-happened" explanations following a disturbance on the power system. The implemented functionality uses a model based pattern recognition algorithm provided by AREVA\´s Intelligent Alarm Processing application (IAP). The "what-happened" explanations use association tables based on embedded expert knowledge and the current states of the SCADA system to explain what happened following an event. This paper discusses the operation of both the intelligent alarm processor and the "what-happened" applications that perform the task of reducing operator overloading and providing clear explanations of what occurred during disturbances on Eskom\´s transmission system.
