Assessment of soil moisture especial its spatial variability is a prerequisite for better understanding of vegetation restoration, especially in Mu Us sandy land, a serious desertification areas in China and around the world. The spatial variability of surface (0~20 cm) soil moisture in Salix psammophila plantation was estimated using statistical and geostatistic analyses. The results indicated significant spatial variability in surface soil moisture exists. The spatial variability indicators namely CV, variances and the semivariogram sill is 0.129, 0.667 and 0.662, respectively. The spatial variability of surface soil moisture was mainly affected by different plant species water consumption and evapotranspiration. Further researches on spatial variability of soil moisture in Mu Us sandy land are needed and this enhanced understanding may contribute to vegetation restoration and desertification control and prevention in semi-arid environments.
