Abstract
A mud pulser telemetry system, used for the control and transmission of data from inside a borehole to the surface during drilling operations, is described. The system modulates the drilling mud circulating in the well, creating pressure pulses which are decoded at the surface into digital serial data. The mud pulser is composed of a mechanical mud flow controller, a microprocessor-based pulser driver system, and a high-temperature electronics mud flow detector. The functions performed by the electronics system are outlined, and the performance specifications are described. The qualification tests for operation in high-temperature, shock, and vibration environments are also discussed. Future requirements for high-temperature electronics and downhole communication in the measurement-while-drilling services are discussed. New transmission technologies are addressed
