Abstract
A study was initiated to characterize the behavior of 11-kV polymer concrete insulators obtained from several different sources. A program of tests was commissioned, including laboratory tests and field trials, in order to assess the long-term performance of small polymer concrete pin insulators for outdoor application in the UK. The authors present results from the first phase of the study. Based on the information generated by this project, it can be stated that polymer concrete insulators perform well in direct comparison with identical porcelain insulators and that there is considerable scope for radically new designs for achieving superior performance
