Abstract
Powering multiple computer loads connected phase-neutral in a 3-phase wye distribution system places exceptional thermal stresses on the switchgear, transformers and wiring of that system. The presence of harmonic currents can lead to equipment failures and, in the worst case, fires. Harmonic currents also cause reduced efficiency of use resulting in wasted energy and extra operating costs. A number of methods exist to prevent overloading or failure of the distribution system, either by accommodation or elimination of the harmonic currents. This paper will be focus on the problems caused by harmonic currents, methods of dealing with or eliminating these extra currents, and the benefits of doing so.
