Abstract
A digitally controlled monitoring system has been installed to observe and control the propagation of cracks in the Brunelleschi Dome in Florence. The real time availability of data makes it reasonable to think of some type of statistical process control able to check either a possible incorrect functioning of the measurement and recording instruments or an anomalous behaviour of the structure or both. In this paper a statistical approach is proposed to characterise the measures supplied by the system. The aim is to avoid the temporal variability of the physical quantities measured. So it would be possible to analyse a dynamic process as a static one
