  • Abstract
The performance of inhibit sense multiple access (ISMA) in a wireless CDMA environment for short burst data service with multiple codes is investigated. Data users are allowed to transmit a short message up to several frames in each burst in a contention manner using the reverse common channels. Several such channels are allocated for this data service. Data users contend for the traffic channels using either the ISMA or slotted Aloha protocol. The capture probability with multiple-codes is derived. Simulations are used to compare the performance of the protocols. The results show that for this short data messages scenario ISMA has a higher throughput than slotted Aloha. A slightly different version of ISMA is also proposed to reduce the access delay for real-time messages
