  • Abstract
    This paper addresses the enhancement of cordless terminal mobility (CTM) to facilitate evolution towards UMTS. This work has been carried out in Eurescom Project P606. An opportunity exists for convergence between CTM and GSM to provide a service for dual-mode terminals. The paper examines the business model for UMTS and how this can be applied to CTM evolution. Over the last decade or so, two very different methods have been implement to meet the demand for mobility, i.e. universal personal telecommunications (UPT) service on the fixed network and the introduction of a cellular network. Each of these methods has its benefits and drawbacks. UPT supports manual location registration by means of DTMF keystrokes in response to voice dialogues. Cellular offers automatic registration and in-call handover between base-stations but does not capitalise on the wire-line access invested in the fixed network. Cordless terminal mobility (CTM) is a solution offering automatic registration of the terminal to cordless base-stations connected to the fixed network, near wire-line voice quality but somewhat limited radio coverage
