Abstract
Due to the complex hypsography the lightning failure rates of transmission lines in mountainous areas are higher than those in plain areas, and the lightning performance evaluation of transmission lines in mountainous areas is also more complex. In this paper, based on the regular statistical method and the classical electric geometry model (EGM), an improved electric geometry model is proposed which includes the effects of the wind deflection, the ground obliquity and the mutual shielding between the phase wires in order to evaluate the lightning performance of transmission lines in entirety. Taking a 220kV transmission line as an example, the calculated results of lightning failure rates are compared with the operation data and the proposed calculation method is verified.
